Forking a GitLab Project Repo
When you want to have a write-access of someone else’s GitLab project repo you need to fork it. There are many reasons you might want to do this.
- You might want to adapt someone else’s project to work more like the way you want.
- Perhaps you just want to make sure you have a copy of something you depend on in case it ever goes away.
- You could be making a change you want to contribute back to the owner.
But First …
Forking doesn’t require anything but an open web browser.
Step by Step
Open your web browser.
Navigate in your browser to the project repo you wish to fork.
Locate the blue Clone button to the right and then the Fork button to the left of it.
You should see that you now have a new project repo of your own that is identical in your list of Projects.
