Editing Basic YAML Files with Vim

  1. Open a terminal
  2. Change into the ~/repos/codebook directory.
    • cd ~/repos/codebook
  3. Make a yaml directory.
    • mkdir yaml
  4. Change into the yaml directory.
  5. Let’s talk about structured data.
  6. Let’s use a Minecraft player object for our sample data.
  7. Create an empty player.yml file.
    • touch player.yml
  8. Open player.yml for editing in vim.
    • vim player.yml (also vi)
  9. Insert the text player:
    • i for insert mode
    • type in player:
    • cntl-[ or ESC
