Computing / Computers

Computing refers to any time a computer is used to do something.

A computer is any device that can compute including desktops, laptops, phones, tablets, and other smaller devices. Unlike a microcontroller a computer is meant to allow different programs to run rather than just one controlling set of instructions.

Origins of Computing

The term computing used to mean to do a lot of math calculations and was even a job title in the 30s. We seen hints of this in titles like comptroller now who is responsible for all the financials and calculations of a company. In the old days the comptroller was in charge of all the human computers.

I have a hunch that Dickens’ Bob Cratchit was a computer.

In fact, it was Michael Babbage’s annoyance with all the mistakes that the human computers were making in the different tables for accounting and science that brought him to design the first mechanical computer that Ada Lovelace went on to program for the first time in human history.
